If you’re thinking of trying a massage for the first time, you probably don’t know what to expect. If you want to be able to relax completely, it can help to gain a better understanding of what it might be like.

First Massage: What to Expect

On your first visit, we’ll lead you to the Relaxation Lounge and have you fill out our Client Intake Form—it’s similar to what you’ve filled out at your doctor’s office, though not nearly as long but with enough space for drawing or coloring too. Your pick. This form allows us to get a broader understanding of your overall health.

You’re welcome to help yourself to snacks, fresh fruit infused water, or a cup of hot tea.

We recommend you visit the washroom now, as it’s a bit of a buzzkill to interrupt your massage session if you’re about to burst—so to speak.

Once you’re ready, your licensed massage therapist will lead you to one of our four treatment rooms.

Tips for Your First Massage

Let Them Know it’s Your First Massage

Before your massage begins, they’ll talk with you about the depth of pressure, areas of focus (pain, discomfort, and tension are all signs your body needs attention), and areas to avoid (e.g. some clients don’t enjoy facial massages). Be sure to tell your therapist that this is your first bodywork session so s/he can understand your needs and can make sure you know exactly what to expect from your massage. We take our client’s comfort level seriously, especially those new to massage.

Don’t Be Afraid to Speak Up

If your therapist is applying too much pressure or you experience discomfort in any way, please let them know. Of course, if there isn’t enough pressure, speak up! There’s nothing worse than getting a massage with too little “oomph” or strength behind it. Your therapist will check in with you, however, should you experience sudden shyness. Either during your session or immediately following, your therapist will let you know which areas on your body require more attention. They will also create a customized treatment plan which may include stretches, areas to strengthen, and other at-home self-care suggestions to try before your next bodywork session.
